Plaid Tidings
Plaid happens to be “in” around St. Helena right now. You don’t have to be Scottish or read Alexander McCall-Smith books to like plaid and we aren’t going to explore any of the kilt jokes here.
Our own Tim Setzer – otherwise known as “Sparky” -- is one of The Plaids who is performing at the White Barn in St. Helena in “Plaid Tidings.” We caught him last weekend, which leaves this weekend in their limited engagement.
If you haven’t caught “Forever Plaid,” you should. It may be understandable if you had some understanding of the 50’s and early 60’s. Perry Como and Ed Sullivan play cameo pop roles and yes, I do remember seeing them in black and white. It may have been my first exposure to the Vienna Boys Choir, Lipizzaner Stallions and The Beatles. (No explaining how those three ended up in the same sentence – other than Ed Sullivan.)
The story goes that “The Plaids,” a singing group who were tragically wiped out by a school bus, have returned to earth to give the concert that they missed performing.
“Plaid Tidings” is the sequel where the four of them have returned yet again to capture the holiday spirit.
Tim and crew were perfect Plaids. A bunch of us went to cheer him on but we may have been drawn there by the intermission wines and desserts. I recommend the Nickel & Nickel Merlot as well as the brownies. (I don’t normally believe in red wine and chocolate together, but then again, it is hard to say why plaid looks good.)
You can’t help leaving the show with a smile and we are waiting for Tim to show up at work tomorrow so we can start calling him “Sparky."
